High-end finishing of folding cartons in efficient inline-production

| PI 224

As part of the Value Added Packaging Initiative, the members and partners of the PrintCity Alliance are launching a new project entitled "Real Life Sample".

The successful presentation of the VAPack sample folder at drupa 2012 is now being followed by a continuation focusing on new production technologies.

Gravure, screen and flexo printing, conventional (also food approved) and UV, digital printing, hot and cold foil application, embossing and debossing, Iriodine and numerous coating versions are the parameters of the project.

"The aim of this project is to give a realistic demonstration of how high-end finishing, creative shapes and forms, design and packing technology interact in the packaging sector and make a decisive contribution to brand-building, positioning and value added.

An extremely flexible production system, an innovative and visually very striking folding-carton design, and collaboration with a leading folding-carton manufacturer like AR Carton, open up new worlds," says Lars Scheidweiler, Product Group Manager Rigid Packaging at Sappi Alfeld GmbH.

The focus is on cardboard packagings with almost exclusively inline, high-end finishing for the market segments of confectionery, cosmetics and luxury beverages.

The first step involves the production of examples for confectionery that not only comply with the stringent EU food safety standards, but also illustrate a wide range of finishing options. Again, the demands on the design, as well as the individual materials and production parameters, are summarised in accompanying tutorials.

A Gallus ICS 670 from Gallus Stanz- und Druckmaschinen GmbH will initially be used for production, with InfiniStream® technology from Océ additionally being applied in a later phase.

Apart from the PrintCity members Eltosch, Leonhard Kurz, Merck, MetsäBoard, Océ, Sappi Fine Paper Europe and WEILBURGER Graphics, numerous other partners will also be taking part in the project:

AR Carton (3D design), Esko (3D design tools and visualisation), Folien Company (laminating films), Gietz (embossing machines), Hinderer+Mühlich (embossing dies), Marbach (cutting dies), Reproflex (flexo plates), Reproservice (data preparation), Saueressig (gravure cylinders), Sun Chemical (gravure inks) and Zeller+Gmelin (food approved cold foil adhesives & UV flexo inks).

"We're delighted to be able to realise such a comprehensive project with this "who's who" of the packaging industry. And we're particularly pleased to welcome all the new partners in our alliance," says Rainer Kuhn, Managing Director of the PrintCity Alliance.

The project will be presented for the first time and intensively discussed in interactive break-out sessions on the occasion of the Packaging Inspiration Forum in Düsseldorf on 24 and 25 April 2013. The Forum is aimed at Designers (including designers who do not yet have a foot in the growing packaging industry), media producers, brand owners, printers and finishers.
