Drawings & riddles

The "Colouring & Puzzle Fun Project" was implemented for drupa. The task of the highlight project is not only to produce a colouring and puzzle book, but also to stage it and make it more attractive for the recipients.
Together with the PrintCity team and the project partners Heidelberger Druckmaschinen and the paper wholesaler Antalis, a packaging slipcase and a sticker sheet were developed in addition to the coloring and puzzle book and implemented with various finishes, including, of course, a bag of gummy bears in addition to the coloring and puzzle fun.

To showcase the wide range of production techniques, two versions were produced that demonstrate the different intensities of refinement.

Project components and technical implementations

Coloring/Puzzle Book

Final format: A4, book block: 24 pages, cover: 4 pages
Processing: Softcover
Interior paper: Cocoon, Offset BA 100% recycled paper (Blue Angel, FSC Recycled, EU Ecolabel, Cradle to Cradle Silver) with a high degree of whiteness (CIE 130) without the use of optical brighteners (OBA), uncoated, 100 g/m²
Cover paper: Upside, Premium 2 Face, double-sided coated from virgin fiber (SBS) with a silk matte finish, high whiteness, stiffness, and volume, 100% cellulose, GZ, 350g/m², FSC-certified, EU Ecolabel
Printing/Refinement: Book block: 4/4-color LED-UV offset printing
Cover: 4/4-color LED-UV offset printing with intermediate dryers and additional UV lamps in the final drying (hybrid)

Printing machines: Heidelberg XL 75-8P+L, Rollers: LotoTec®-MRS inking rollers / LotoTec®-XLT dampening rollers
Cover refinement: Coating with WEILBURGER Graphics SENOLITH® UV OFFSET MATT LACQUER LED HYBRID 369868 from the printing unit using an offset printing plate. Subsequently, inline overcoating with WEILBURGER Graphics SENOLITH® UV GLOSS LACQUER HYBRID 360053, applied with a 15ccm Hashur raster roller.

Packaging

Scope: 2-part (tray and slipcase)
Processing: Cutting, punching, gluing, assembling
Slipcase: 4/0-color LED-UV offset printing with intermediate dryers and UV lamps in the final drying (hybrid), tray unprinted
Printing inks: Saphira Ink LE-/LED UV 4000 colors, cover additionally with Pantone 485 (Haribo red) as an LED-UV special color (same color series).
Printing machines: Heidelberg XL 106-8-LYY-1+L, Rollers: LotoTec®-MRS inking rollers / LotoTec®-XLT dampening rollers
Slipcase carton: Upside Premium 1 Face, one-sided white coated carton from virgin fiber (SBS) with a silk matte finish, 100% cellulose, GZ, 350g/m², high whiteness, high stiffness, and high volume, FSC-certified, EU Ecolabel

Refinement Version 1:

Finished using the cold transfer process with the KURZ KPS slim 2.0 (patent pending) reduced to 6my carrier thickness. The layers of lacquer were only transferred where they were needed. The carrier is only used for transfer and does not remain on the end product. Subsequent coating with WEILBURGER Graphics SENOLITH® UV GLOSS LACQUER HYBRID 360053 from the coating unit over the entire surface, applied using a 17cc anilox roller. This was overcoated inline with WEILBURGER Graphics SENOLITH® UV OFFSET MATT LACQUER 369006 from the printing unit using an offset printing plate.

IOC embossing by Kocher+Beck
The IOC technology by Kocher+Beck offers an innovative solution for embossing and punching with offset printing machines.
A significant advantage is that existing printing or coating units of printing machines can be easily converted into embossing or punching units. This allows refinement (finishing) to be carried out at full printing speed, increasing efficiency. For slipcase 2, Heidelberg machines were used with an embossing plate, special underlay set, and packing material for the counter-pressure cylinder from Kocher+Beck.
The application possibilities are highly flexible, ranging from the creation of security features through micro-embossing to the production of the most complex punching shapes. The Kocher+Beck solutions are suitable for the production of light packaging, sticker sheets, labels, and IML (In Mold Labels). In addition to inline processing, it is possible to carry out further processing nearline or offline, depending on the need and the available machine equipment. This offers maximum flexibility to meet your individual requirements.

Refinement Version 2:
Coating with WEILBURGER Graphics SENOSOFT® WB FP MATT COATING LA 6-27/209 A. Application with a 3G raster roller from Heidelberg (presumably 9ccm volume). Subsequently, offline partial overcoating with WEILBURGER Graphics SENOLITH® UV GLOSS LACQUER INLINE 360022, 18ccm Hashur raster roller.

Sticker sheet

Production: DIGITAL METAL® application by KURZ with subsequent 4-c printing in an inline process with the DM-JETLINER integrated into an HP 6900 digital printing machine. Using KURZ”s patented 2D inkjet on transfer technology, the DM-JETLINER is able to finish a wide range of substrates, including uncoated paper, with brilliant large-area metallization and intricate details.
